Are Fuel Cards Worth It?
If you run a business with vehicles on the road, whether it's a single ute or a small fleet, you've probably been pitched a fuel card at some point. The promise is simple: save money on fuel, keep your expenses organised, and make GST time a little less painful. But is it actually worth it?
We recently put this to the test with real data from one of our clients. We pulled six months of invoices (January to June 2026) and cross-referenced every transaction against the actual pump price on the day.
Our area consistently shows some of the higher pump prices in the country on apps like GASPY. The reason comes down to geography and competition. We don’t have access to the lower-cost independent brands like Gull, Waitomo and NPD. When larger brands are your main options, pump prices tend to sit at or above the national average.
Here's what the small dataset shows:
January 2026
Pump prices were sitting around $2.06/L. The fuel card price after GST was closer to $1.54/L — a saving of roughly $0.52 per litre. On 214 litres, that adds up quickly.February 2026
Pump prices dipped slightly to around $1.96/L. The fuel card tracked a similar pattern, delivering savings of around $0.37/L across four fill-ups.March 2026
This is where things got interesting. Pump prices surged — some fill-ups hit $3.30–$3.50/L as fuel costs spiked nationally. The fuel card pricing also moved, but the discount held, keeping costs meaningfully lower than what you'd pay walking up to the pump.April–May 2026
Pump prices stayed elevated, ranging from $2.29 to $3.90/L at various points. The fuel card continued to offer a consistent discount, with the saving stabilising in the 15–25% range.June 2026
Pump prices eased slightly from their recent highs, though still ranging from $2.73 to $3.26/L across fill-ups in our area. The card's discount remained firm — our client saved around $0.69 per litre across five fill-ups, coming to just over $182 saved in June alone. That was actually the biggest single-month saving across the entire dataset.
Across all six months, the total dollar saving came to $778 — from 27 fill-ups and 1,540 litres. Simply by using a fuel card instead of paying the pump price.
But It's Not Just About Price
The per-litre saving is the headline, but the admin benefits are also helpful:
One consolidated monthly tax invoice with GST already calculated — no more chasing receipts.
Per-transaction detail (date, site, litres, price) making it easy to reconcile against your bank and allocate costs correctly.
Direct debit on the 20th of the following month, so your cash flow isn't hit at the pump.
A clear audit trail for each card and each driver — useful if you have staff using the vehicles.
Where Else Can You Find Savings?
A fuel card is one tool — but it's not the only one. Here are a few others worth stacking alongside it:
GASPY — a free app that crowd-sources live pump prices across New Zealand. In areas like ours where there's limited brand competition, prices can still vary 10–20c/L between nearby towns. If you're flexible about which station you visit and have a larger tank to fill, a quick GASPY check before you pull in is well worth it.
Timing your fill-ups — fuel prices in New Zealand tend to move throughout the week. Midweek pricing is often lower than Thursday/Friday before the weekend repricing cycle. It's not a guaranteed rule, but it's a pattern worth being aware of if you have some flexibility on when you fill.
Loyalty programmes — some fuel providers offer reward points or stacking discounts on top of any existing card arrangement. Worth checking whether your account is eligible before assuming it's not.
The best outcome for most Warkworth business owners is probably combining a fuel card with an occasional GASPY check — the card gives you the consistent per-litre discount and the admin benefits, GASPY helps you pick the cheapest station in the network on any given day.
Our Take
For most business owners with even one vehicle on the road regularly, a fuel card is a no-brainer. The combination of a genuine per-litre discount, simplified GST reporting, and clean transaction records makes it one of the easier wins we can point clients to.
As with most things in business, the devil is in the details — which card, which network, and whether you're actually analysing your fuel spend rather than just filing the invoices. That's where having a good accountant in your corner helps. (We might be slightly biased on that last point.)
